Recording music is like putting together a puzzle based on memory and vibes alone. You go in with an idea, a willingness to play and to listen, and an openness to let the song do what it wants. Sure, you wrote the tune and have played it hundreds of times. You know exactly “how it’s supposed to go”. But the studio contains an alchemy all its own and upon stepping inside you surrender to the magic.
On January 24 and 25, I recorded songs in a cozy Milwaukee studio with Hayward Williams and Charlie Koltak. Both are incredible musicians who bring so much energy and life to every project they touch, and this one was no different. They didn’t just play the songs like any hired guns. No, they added their own ideas and personalities and transformed the songs from singer-songwriter folk tunes into something bigger. Something spirited and full. Something that can only be made through collaboration and subtle head nods from across the room. Together, we built the border of the puzzle: bass, drums, and vocals.
Our time together was delightful. And the music we made is something that I am truly proud of. I can’t wait to share it.
Next, we need to put together the rest of the pieces.
Adding instruments, sounds, and vocals
Mixing
Mastering
One piece, then another. Until the puzzle is complete.
More to come.
